3.4.5 Sets or kits. When sets or kits of tools are furnished, preservation of individual tools shall
be in accordance with table I, except as follows:
a. Sets or kits of tools furnished in a plastic or leather case which are not greater than
10 pounds (4.54 kilogram (kg)) shall have each tool preserved as specified in table I and
processed method 33. Sets which are greater than 10 pounds (4.54 kg) shall be processed
method 32 of MIL-STD-2073-1.
b. Sets or kits of tools furnished in finished wooden cases, such as varnished wood
micrometer cases intended for use as a tool box or chest, shall have each tool preserved as
specified in table I. The unit shall be packaged method 32 of MIL-STD-2073-1.
Projections such as hinges and catches on the inner container shall be cushioned with
material specified in 3.4.3. The container shall be in accordance with ASTM D 5118.
c. Tools in a kit, which may be damaged by preservatives from other tools, shall be wrapped
or bagged.
d. Sets and kits which are not furnished in a carrying case shall be packed in a unit container.
The container selected shall accommodate the load and size to be packed therein.
Selection of unit container shall be from table II.
To prevent damage during handling, shipment and storage each tool shall be preserved, wrapped
and cushioned, as required. Tools shall be placed and secured in the individual slots or contour
cut-outs provided in the carrying case or arranged within the set or kit-container in a compact
manner.
3.4.5.1 Set or kit cases. Alternatively, wrapping of each tool in barrier material specified in 3.4.1
shall not be required when all interior surfaces of the wooden case contacting the tools are
preserved as follows: When three coats of grade A nitrocellulose resin or acrylic lacquer are
applied.
3.4.6 Unit containers. Unless otherwise specified (see 6.2), unit containers not specifically
required for the method of preservation shall conform to the requirements of specifications listed
in table II, at the option of the contractor. Unit containers shall be of minimum cube and tare.
Containers shall conform to the weather-resistant type, class, or grade specified. Containers not
providing waterproof or weather-resistant characteristics shall be overwrapped in barrier material
providing equal weather-resistantance of ASTM D 5118 and ASTM D 1974 class weather-
resistant boxes.
