method III unit protection only (see 6.6). When shaped, preformed, or molded packages are
used, they shall incorporate provisions for separating unit quantities by scoring or other means.
The plastic material shall be compatible with other materials utilized in the process of preservation
and the packaged items.
3.4.2.4 Air motors. Interior surfaces of air motors shall be coated with a preservative
conforming to MIL-L-21260, grade 30 by injection into the air stream while operating the motors
until the preservative appears at the exhaust ports. Air inlets and outlets shall be closed with
plastic plugs conforming to MIL-C-5501, or covered with greaseproof barrier material and
secured in place with pressure sensitive tape conforming to ASTM D 5486. Exterior unpainted
metal surfaces of the air motors and handles subject to corrosion shall be coated with
MIL-PRF-16173, grade 1 preservative. Chucks and chuck adapters shall be coated in accordance
with MIL-L-3150 and wrapped with greaseproof barrier material secured in place with pressure-
sensitive tape conforming to ASTM D 5486.
3.4.2.5 Air line lubricators and strainers. Air line lubricators and strainers shall be coated with
MIL-L-21260, grade 30, internally. Exterior unprotected surfaces subject to corrosion shall be
coated with MIL-PRF-16173, grade 1 or grade 4 preservative. Openings into lubricators
removed from the hose shall be sealed with pressure-sensitive tape conforming to ASTM D 5486
or sealed with plastic caps or plugs as specified in 3.4.2.4. The lubricators and strainers shall be
individually wrapped with barrier material and secured with pressure-sensitive tape conforming to
ASTM D 5486.
3.4.2.6 Gear cases. Gear cases containing lubricant shall be drained and the housing and gears
flushed with petroleum solvent agitated with compressed air. The gears shall not be operated
with the cleaning solvent in the gear case. The solvent shall be drained and the housing
thoroughly dried. The drain and filter plugs shall be coated with MIL-PRF-16173, grade 1
preservative and replaced. The gear housing shall be refilled with universal gear lubricant, and the
tool operated for a sufficient period of time to coat all parts with lubricant.
3.4.2.7 Repair parts. Repair parts shall be preserved in accordance with MIL-STD-2073-1 for
mechanical and MIL-E-17555 for electrical items.
3.4.2.8 Technical publications. Technical publications, which accompany shipment prepared
for level A, shall be packaged in accordance with method 33 of MIL-STD-2073-1. Technical
publications shall not be placed within the sealed barrier material used to enclose equipment.
Copies of the publication shall be packed in the shipping container housing the main unit and
packing lists shall indicate which container includes the technical publication and shall indicate
the approximate location therein. Technical publications, when shipped in bulk quantities, shall
not be individually wrapped, but shall be packed in accordance with the requirements of the
applicable technical publication specification or packaged in containers conforming to
MIL-STD-2073-1.
