3.4.2.9 Electric hand tools. Electric hand tools having windings and armatures shall have ports
or other openings covered with pressure-sensitive tape conforming to ASTM D 5486. Exposed
metal surfaces shall be protected as specified in 3.4.2.4.
3.4.2.10 Hydraulic units. Units that are drained shall be flushed with a preservation compound
as specified (see 6.2). Units which are not drained, shall be sealed to prevent leakage of the
hydraulic fluid during handling, shipment, and storage. All external unpainted ferrous metal
surfaces shall be covered with MIL-PRF-16173, grade 1 or grade 4 preservative.
3.4.2.11 Pneumatic hose and fittings. Pneumatic hose and fittings shall be cleaned and preserved
in accordance with MIL-STD-2073-1.
3.4.3 Cushioning and cushioning materials (see 3.5.1.2). Tools, repair parts and accessories shall
be cushioned in accordance with MIL-STD-2073-1, to prevent damage to the item and prevent
puncture or tearing of the barrier materials. Excessive use of cushioning within the unit package
shall be avoided. Excelsior, shredded newspaper, and similar materials which have not been
chemically refined for noncorrosiveness are unacceptable for interior packaging, unless they are
enclosed in a sealed waterproof barrier conforming to PPP-B-1055. Loose fill materials for
applications such as cushioning, fill, stuffing and dunnage is prohibited. Cushioning materials
used within the unit package shall be in accordance with MIL-STD-2073-1. When specified (see
6.2), materials selected for cushioning and wrapping materials shall be fire-resistant.
3.4.3.1 Preserved (coated) items. Cushioning materials shall be separated from all items to which
a preservative compound is applied by a barrier material conforming to QQ-A-1876, type II or
MIL-B-22191.
3.4.3.2 Uncoated or protective coated items. Items not requiring a contact preservative such as
completely plated, painted, or prime coated; nonferrous items or items that may be damaged by
contact preservatives shall not have preservatives applied. The items shall be separated from
cushioning which has not been proven to be noncorrosive. One of the aforementioned barriers or
material conforming to A-A-1249, L-P-378, or MIL-B-22191, type III shall be used when
physical protection is required (see 6.6).
3.4.3.3 Other items. A barrier is not required between the cushioning of such items as textiles,
rubber, plastic, and other such items.
3.4.4 Unit pack quantities. Unless otherwise specified (see 6.2), the quantity of identical items in
each unit pack shall be in accordance with table I, column 4.
