3.5.1 General requirements for levels A and B. Shipping containers shall be of uniform size,
minimum tare weight and cube, and designed to fit the contents to result in a compact, nonshifting
load. Except as specified herein (see 3.5.1.1), the weight limitation of the applicable container
shall be as specified in the container specification or appendix thereto. Containers greater than
200 pounds (90.72 kg) gross weight and containers with length and width dimensions of
48 x 24 inches (1 219.20 x 609.60 mm) (or more) weighing more than 100 pounds (45.36 kg)
shall be modified with skids in accordance with the applicable box specification. Fiberboard and
wirebound boxes greater than 200 pounds (90.72 kg) gross weight shall be modified with a
wooden-pallet base, fabricated from nominal 1-inch (25.40 mm) lumber deck boards and nominal
3- x 4-inch (76.20 x 101.60 mm) lumber skids. Closure shall be in accordance with the applicable
box specification and the appendix thereto.
3.5.1.1 Weight limitations.
3.5.1.1.1 Civil agency. Unless otherwise specified (see 6.2), the gross weight of the shipping
container for level B packing shall be approximately 65 pounds (29.48 kg) but not greater than
80 pounds (36.29 kg), except when a single item is greater than the weight limitations. Quantities
shall be specified in the contract (see 6.2).
3.5.1.1.2 Army requirements. The gross weight of the exterior shipping container shall be
governed by the limitations of the applicable container specification, but not greater than
200 pounds (90.72 kg).
3.5.1.1.3 Navy and Air Force requirements. Unless otherwise specified (see 6.2), the gross
weight of each shipping container shall be not greater than 200 pounds (90.72 kg) except when a
single item is greater than the weight limitation.
3.5.1.2 Cushioning, anchoring, blocking and bracing. Cushioning, anchoring, blocking, and
bracing shall be provided to restrict movement of the packed items within the shipping container.
Application shall be in accordance with MIL-STD-2073-1, MIL-STD-1186, and applicable
container specification, and the appendix thereto, as applicable. Loose fill material shall not be
used for packing applications.
3.5.1.3 Cube reduction. Disassembly of items shall be in accordance with the contractor's
recommendations to reduce cubage, subject to first article approval. In no case shall disassembly
be to such an extent as to render field reassembly difficult or impractical with available tools.
3.5.2 Level A.
3.5.2.1 Shipping container. Tools and accessories shall be preserved as specified (see 6.2) and
packed in shipping containers as indicated in table IV for level A. The container selection shall be
at the option of the contractor. Container closure shall be in accordance with the applicable
container specification or appendix thereto.
